Late in August, as sunshine days began to peek through, Beautiful Room held floral day at Maree’s Gembrook home, MH Atelier. What better way to spend a Sunday than enjoying the simple beauty of nature and food shared…
Here is a recap for those who couldn’t make it and who we hope to see in Gembrook before long!
After the drive to leafy Gembrook, guests were greeted with morning tea before embarking on a personal tour of Maree’s home. The main house boasts multiple woodstoves, hardwood flooring and rooms furnished by Maree, with personal artwork and pieces collected from over the years. Before strolling down to the garden, one of the three cottages surrounding the home was explored. With two floors, including a stand alone tub, the cottages are the ideal getaway for family and friends.
Past the tree house and the chooks (affectionately known as “the girls”), there was no time to linger on the flying fox as newly blooming blossoms awaited us!
When searching for natural treasures for later arrangements, we made sure to seek out foliage and interesting branches, as well as blooms.
With arms full the garden finds were laid upon the kitchen bench. With the help of some additional local seasonal flowers, Maree set to work demonstrating some easily mastered techniques to make a lovely arrangement. Branches were twirled, daffodils, tulips and proteas carefully placed, while lunch bubbled away on the stove. Finally after some tweaking, twisting and standing back to admire the work, we had stunning arrangements, each it’s own personality.
As the flowers sat pretty along the stairs we gathered for a lunch of roast pumpkin and carrot soup, topped with roasted sesame Kale.
Following this, enticed by the sun, a dessert of Apple & Raspberry Cake was served on the deck.
This dessert is one of Maree’s favourites, simple and delicious, not to mention pretty too!

Apple & Raspberry Cake
This recipe is from one of our previous Beautiful Roomies Felicity!
Preparation time: 15 mins, with 40-45 mins for cooking
6 Granny Smith Apples
250g Butter, melted
3 Cups Self Raising Flour
¾ Cups Caster Sugar
2 Tsp Vanilla
2 Punnets of Raspberries (frozen may be substituted)
Halving this recipe would yield a small tin, perhaps of 20cm if desired, but Maree likes to make it to the quantities above!
Preheat the oven to 180C. Grease and line a round cake tin with baking paper.
Slice and then stew the apples until just soft but not yet falling apart.
Drain in a colander and set aside, allow time to drain as much liquid as possible. The key to this cake is having as little liquid as possible left in the fruit.
Add the melted butter, sifted flour, sugar, eggs and vanilla together.
Beat with a wooden spoon till smooth. Press three quarters of this mix into the cake tin, pushing it up at the sides.
Next spread the apple across and scatter raspberries over the apple. Finally drop dobs of the remaining mixture across the top.
Bake for 30-45 mins, allow the cake to firm before turning out. Serve with cream, more fruit if desired and good company!
